Fabrications

2014 - 2016
Mixed media installation

The physical and the virtual have become entangled. Any clear demarcation is elusive. Visual sensations spill over from either realm and fold into one material. Fabrications simulate organic form and motion but reveal the artifacts of digital heritage; glitches, polygons, distortion. They are all deeply rooted in the
photographic, in the simple portrayal of light and shadow. I heavily appropriate celluloid aesthetics, and in my images attempt to invoke the sublime states of wonder and terror. I am interested in this encounter with the material beyond the image plane, where materiality is immaterial, when the fabric before our eyes is virtual. Is the apparatus (print, screen or animated form) the demarcation between the physical and virtual, or does a demarcation exist within a mental state, on a phenomenological level?
